Botafogo is a neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone, set around Botafogo Bay, an inlet of Guanabara Bay. The beach forms a smooth crescent on the map, and across the water the rock of Sugarloaf Mountain closes the view. Flamengo Park runs along the shore to the north.
Behind the bay, the streets fill a narrow valley between steep, forested hills, with main roads running inland from the beach toward Humaitá and the Lagoa. The neighbourhood mixes older houses, apartment blocks, schools and cultural spaces, and it gave its name to Botafogo, one of Rio's major football clubs.
