Breda grew up where the Mark and the Aa of Weerijs meet in western North Brabant, and water still defines its outline. The old centre is enclosed by the singels, the former fortress moats, which trace an irregular loop on the map. Inside that loop, streets converge on the Grote Markt and the tall Gothic tower of the Grote Kerk.
On the northern side of the centre stands Breda Castle, home of the Royal Military Academy since 1828, with Valkenberg park spread out before it. The city's name recurs in European history: the long Spanish siege of 1624–25 was painted by Velázquez, and Charles II issued the Declaration of Breda here in 1660 before returning to England.

The Mark and harbour
The river Mark flows north out of the centre past the old harbour, a slender line that links the fortress town to the wider Brabant waterways.
