The Hague stretches from its historic centre northwest to the North Sea, and the map reads like a transition from dense town to open coast. Around the Binnenhof and the rectangular Hofvijver pond the streets are tight and irregular, then long avenues lead outward through villa districts, parks and wooded dunes to the seaside resort of Scheveningen.
Water appears everywhere in smaller forms. Remnants of the old canal ring, the grachten, circle parts of the centre, and further canals run through the newer neighbourhoods. Large green spaces such as the Haagse Bos and the Scheveningse Bosjes break up the street pattern, giving the plan more open ground than most Dutch cities of similar size.
The city is the seat of the Dutch government and parliament, though Amsterdam is the constitutional capital, and it is home to the International Court of Justice in the Peace Palace. Between the centre and the sea lies a wide belt of parks, woods and dunes, including the Scheveningse Bosjes, which appears as a soft band of green between the built districts.
