Cairns sits on the east coast of Far North Queensland, on the western shore of Trinity Inlet, with the Coral Sea just beyond. The city centre is laid out in a compact grid of wide streets running down to the Esplanade and the waterfront. To the west, steep ranges rise sharply behind the suburbs, pressing the city into a narrow band between mountains and sea.
Cairns is best known as a base for visiting the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest, both World Heritage areas. Boats leave for the reef from the marina, while the Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail cableway climb into the ranges above the city. The Esplanade Lagoon, a public swimming pool beside the tidal flats, is a familiar sight on the waterfront.

The waterfront promenade runs along the edge of the grid, facing the tidal flats and the sea. Its long curve marks the clearest line between the city and the water.
Ranges to the west
Steep forested mountains rise close behind the suburbs. Roads wind up into them toward Kuranda and the tablelands, leaving large open areas that frame the dense city below.
