Groote Eylandt is the largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. Its outline is broad and uneven, with wide bays, sandy points and a cluster of smaller islands off its shores. The interior is largely open country of woodland and low ranges, lightly crossed by tracks linking a small number of communities.
The name is Dutch for large island, given by Abel Tasman's expedition in 1644. The island is the home of the Anindilyakwa people and is Aboriginal land. Manganese mining has shaped its western side, where the town of Alyangula and the mining areas form the most defined patch of roads on the map, alongside the communities of Angurugu and Umbakumba.
