Calbayog City lies on the western coast of Samar island in the Eastern Visayas, facing the Samar Sea. It is among the largest cities in the Philippines by land area, and the map reflects that scale. A compact urban centre sits on the shore, a thin line of coastal settlements stretches north and south, and behind them lies a large interior of hills, rivers and forest roads.
The town centre gathers near the mouth of the Calbayog River, where a small grid of streets meets the waterfront and the port. From there the coastal highway follows the shoreline and links barangays that sit between the sea and the rising ground behind them. Inland, rivers branch through the uplands and give the outer part of the frame an organic texture.
