Leyte lies in the Eastern Visayas of the Philippines. On the map it is a long island running north to south, with mountains down its centre and plains along the northern and eastern coasts. A narrower southern section splits into two peninsulas around Sogod Bay. The main highways follow the coast and climb across the island's middle.
Tacloban, the largest city, is at the north-eastern corner, where San Juanico Strait separates Leyte from Samar. The San Juanico Bridge crosses this narrow, island-studded channel and is one of the longest bridges in the country. Along the eastern shore, Leyte Gulf opens into the Philippine Sea.
