Mactan lies just off the eastern coast of Cebu, separated from it by a narrow channel. From above it is low and compact, and its outline is shaped by reefs and shallow water. The long straight runway of the international airport dominates the northern part of the island. The rest is a dense pattern of urban streets in Lapu-Lapu City, giving way to resorts and piers along the eastern coast.
Several bridges and a newer expressway cross the channel to Mandaue and Cebu City, and they make Mactan part of the wider metropolitan area. The island's name is known throughout the Philippines from the Battle of Mactan in 1521. There, the local chief Lapu-Lapu defeated the forces of Ferdinand Magellan, who was killed in the fighting.

The eastern shore is lined with resorts, piers and reef-edged beaches. The coastline there is irregular and marked by many small jetties.
