Cebu is one of the narrowest large islands in the Philippines, a thin band of land running north to south between the Tañon Strait and the Camotes Sea. A mountainous backbone runs down the middle, and most roads follow the coasts, so the island's map is drawn in two parallel lines of settlement with steep, lightly marked ground between them.
Halfway down the east coast, Metro Cebu breaks that pattern with a dense web of streets spreading along the shore and climbing into the hills behind it. Across a narrow channel lies Mactan Island, linked by several bridges and home to the international airport. It was on Mactan in 1521 that Ferdinand Magellan was killed in battle against the forces of Lapu-Lapu.
