Castelvetrano is in the province of Trapani in western Sicily, on a low rise above the plain that runs down to the Mediterranean. The historic centre is a compact tangle of streets and small squares, while newer quarters spread out in straighter blocks around it. Beyond the town, the map is filled with the fine lines of rural roads crossing olive groves and vineyards.
To the south the land slopes gently toward the coast at Marinella di Selinunte, where the archaeological park of Selinunte lies within the municipality. The ruins of the ancient Greek city and its temples sit on the shore, and the resort streets of Marinella form a small separate grid beside them.
The town gives its name to the Castelvetrano olive, a bright green table olive of the Nocellara del Belice variety, and the local museum holds the bronze Ephebe of Selinunte. A Castelvetrano map poster links an inland Sicilian town to the coastline and the Greek past just to its south.
