Chongming is an island district of Shanghai, formed from sediment carried down by the Yangtze and deposited where the river meets the East China Sea. On the map it is a long, flattened shape lying across the estuary, with broad channels of water separating it from the mainland on both sides.
The interior is mostly flat farmland, divided by straight roads and a dense network of irrigation channels into a regular, almost ruled pattern. Small towns sit along the main roads, while the eastern tip opens into the Dongtan wetlands, a major stopover for migratory birds.
Chongming is often described as China's largest alluvial island, and it is linked to Pudong by the Shanghai Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge. A Chongming map poster shows a quieter side of Shanghai: water, fields and an island still slowly growing from the river.
