Chongxing lies in the Ningxia region of north-western China, on the plain formed by the Yellow River. This is dry country, and the plain owes its farmland to irrigation: for many centuries, water has been led from the river through canals into the fields. From above, that history shows as long, straight channels and a regular pattern of rectangular plots.
The settlement itself appears as a compact area of streets and blocks within this agricultural grid, linked by roads to nearby towns and to the larger cities of the region. Beyond the irrigated land, the map changes character, as the green plain gives way to drier ground and hills where settlement becomes sparse.
