Ciempozuelos lies south of Madrid, on the edge of the high ground that drops down into the Jarama valley. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets on the upper level. Below it the land flattens into the river plain, with fields, irrigation lines and the winding Jarama. The step between the two levels is one of the clearest features on the map.
The Madrid–Aranjuez railway runs along the valley, and the town grew in the space between the tracks and the high ground. Ciempozuelos is widely known for its large psychiatric hospitals, founded by religious orders in the nineteenth century. Their big walled grounds show up as blocks of open space in an otherwise close street pattern.
A Ciempozuelos map poster captures that contrast. The old centre is dense and irregular, the hospital grounds are broad and ordered, and the valley floor is open and ruled. The large historic psychiatric hospitals take up wide walled plots. They appear as calm, ordered blocks that break up the tighter grain of the surrounding streets.
River and railway
The Jarama bends across the plain, and the railway toward Aranjuez follows the valley. Together they give the lower half of the map two long, contrasting lines.
