Cowley lies in the southeast of Oxford, and its map tells a different story from the colleges of the city centre. Long, straight roads lead out from the Plain, and terraced streets branch off Cowley Road. Further east the pattern loosens into interwar housing estates, playing fields and large industrial sites near the Oxford ring road.
Car manufacturing built Cowley's twentieth-century identity. William Morris began producing cars here in 1913, and the works grew into one of Britain's major car plants. Today the site builds MINI cars. Alongside the factory, Cowley Road became one of Oxford's most diverse streets, lined with shops, restaurants and music venues.
A Cowley map poster brings the dense terraces of east Oxford, the broad open spaces of the car works and the curve of the ring road into one clear composition. The large MINI plant forms a broad block of industrial geometry near the ring road. It is one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
