Crawley in West Sussex was designated as one of Britain's new towns in 1947, and its map still shows the plan. A town centre sits in the middle, and a series of neighbourhoods surrounds it. Each was designed with its own parade of shops, school and green space. Curving residential roads and cul-de-sacs fill these neighbourhoods, and main roads separate them.
Gatwick Airport lies just north of the town, and its long runway is one of the most prominent shapes in the wider area. The airport is a major employer, and the industrial estate at Manor Royal grew between the town and the airfield. To the south and east, woodland and the edge of the High Weald frame the town.
