Worthing stretches along the Sussex coast, and on a map its shape is defined by the sea. The seafront runs almost straight for several miles, with the pier projecting into the Channel from the centre. Behind the promenade, streets form a fairly regular pattern of terraces and avenues, spreading inland across the flat coastal plain.
To the north, the South Downs rise sharply, and the town's growth stops at their foot. The contrast between the dense grid by the sea and the open chalk hills behind it gives the map a clear horizontal structure: sea, town, downs, in three bands.
Worthing Pier opened in the Victorian era and still anchors the seafront. Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest while staying here in 1894, and gave its hero the surname Worthing.
