Cudahy is a small city directly south of Milwaukee, on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Its map is a clear Midwestern grid of straight, residential streets. On the east side, parkland runs along the bluff above the lake. The western edge borders General Mitchell International Airport, whose runways are the largest shapes near town.
The city takes its name from Patrick Cudahy, the meatpacker who moved his plant here in the 1890s and laid out the community around it. The company still bearing his name made the town known for its meat processing. Industry, rail and workers' housing shaped the early plan, and the regular block pattern still reflects it.
A Cudahy map poster works because the parts are so distinct: lake, lakefront park, residential grid, rail and industrial land, and the runways beyond. Each fills its own band of the frame. In black and white, the contrast between the lake's empty surface and the dense streets is especially strong.
