Deba is the headquarters of a Local Government Area in Gombe State, in northeastern Nigeria, to the east of the state capital. It lies on the open savanna, where farmland and grassland stretch in every direction with scattered trees. From above, the town is a cluster of streets and compounds around a central area where the main roads come together, with the densest building near the market and administrative buildings.
Farming is central to life in the area, with seasonal crops planted in the fields around the town. Roads connect Deba to Gombe and to the villages of the LGA. Beyond the centre, houses and compounds gradually thin out into fields, so the edge of the town is soft and changes with the seasons and the harvest.
