Denton is a town in Tameside, on the eastern side of Greater Manchester. For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it was one of the main centres of hat making in Britain. Its mills and workshops made felt hats for markets around the world. The industry has gone, but it remains a large part of the town's identity.
From above, Denton is dense suburban housing criss-crossed by older main roads that meet in the town centre. The River Tame forms part of its northern boundary, a winding green line along the edge. To the west, the M60 ring road and the start of the M67 form a large interchange. Its loops and slip roads are the most eye-catching shapes on the map.
