Warrington sits almost exactly halfway between Liverpool and Manchester, and its map shows why it grew as a crossing point. Just south of the town centre, the River Mersey winds through a series of tight loops. For centuries this was the lowest place where the river could be bridged, and roads and railways still meet at those crossings from every direction.
Further south, the Manchester Ship Canal cuts a straight line alongside the river's meanders, so the poster shows two waterways side by side. One is natural and wandering, the other engineered and direct. The older Sankey Canal passes along the western side of town. It is often described as the first canal of the Industrial Revolution in England.
Around the older centre, the map fills with housing estates and business parks built after Warrington was designated a new town. The M6, M62 and M56 bound this area. The Manchester Ship Canal runs straight across the southern part of town. Swing bridges and a high-level viaduct cross it and connect the districts on either side.
Motorway frame
The M6, M62 and M56 enclose the town on three sides, and their broad interchanges form bold geometric shapes at the edges of the composition.
