Newcastle under Lyme lies in Staffordshire, immediately west of Stoke-on-Trent, and on a map the two merge into a single urban area. The town still has its own distinct centre: a compact cluster of old streets enclosed by a ring road. From there, main roads lead out toward the Potteries towns, the M6 motorway and the Staffordshire countryside.
The town takes its name from a new castle built in the twelfth century near the ancient forest of Lyme. It received a royal charter in 1173, which makes it one of the older boroughs in the region. Just to the west, Keele University occupies a large landscaped estate that includes the historic Keele Hall.
