Dieburg lies in southern Hesse, northeast of Darmstadt, on the flat land by the Gersprenz River. From above, the historic centre is a clear oval. The line of the old town fortifications and moats survives in the ring of streets and green spaces around it, and inside it the street pattern is tight and medieval. Outside, newer neighbourhoods spread over the plain.
The site has been settled since Roman times. In 1926 a Roman Mithraeum, a temple to the god Mithras, was found in Dieburg, and its carved relief is one of the region's most important Roman finds. Later buildings include the pilgrimage church and the Schloss Fechenbach, which now holds the town museum. A campus of Darmstadt's university of applied sciences brings students to the town.
