Duffel Map Poster
Duffel sits in the province of Antwerp, roughly midway between Antwerp and Mechelen, on the river Nete. On a map the river is the defining element: it loops through the municipality in wide bends, with meadows and low-lying ground along its banks where building has kept its distance. The town centre gathers on higher, drier land close to the water.
The main railway between Antwerp and Mechelen passes straight through Duffel, and its line cuts a firm diagonal across the curving river and the older street pattern. Around it, residential streets from different periods fill the space in a mix of short grids and winding lanes, typical of the dense Flemish countryside.
The town gave its name to duffel, a heavy woollen cloth once woven here, which in turn gave its name to the duffel coat and the duffel bag. A Duffel map poster therefore carries a small piece of textile history along with the outline of the town.
