Duluth sits at the western tip of Lake Superior and stretches for miles along the shore of the world's largest freshwater lake by surface area. From above, the city is a long, narrow ribbon. Streets run parallel to the lake in tiers up a steep hillside, cut by creeks and ravines that run down to the water, and the open lake fills much of the frame.
The harbour, shared with Superior, Wisconsin, sits at the centre of the map. It is sheltered by Minnesota Point, a thin sandbar that runs for miles across the mouth of the St. Louis River. The Aerial Lift Bridge crosses the ship canal cut through this spit and links Canal Park to the point. Docks and terminals line the inner harbour.

The lift bridge spans the ship canal cut through the sandbar. It is a small but defining point on the map, where lake freighters and ocean ships enter the harbour.

Streets climb the slope in long parallel rows, interrupted by creeks and wooded ravines. The city reads as layered terraces above the open water of Lake Superior.
