eMkhomazi, long known as Umkomaas, is on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, where the Mkomazi River flows into the Indian Ocean. The map is shaped by three elements. The river widens into an estuary before reaching the sea, the coastline curves steadily along the eastern edge, and the town fills the rising ground between them with streets that follow the slope.
The coastal railway and road run parallel to the shore and act as a spine for the town. Beyond them, the streets rise into the hills in irregular lines. Offshore, and not visible on a street map, lies Aliwal Shoal, a well-known reef that brings divers from around the world to this small town.
