Ferrol lies on the northern shore of the Ría de Ferrol in Galicia, a long inlet that opens to the Atlantic through a narrow channel. That shape has made it one of Spain's key naval ports for centuries. On the map, the water reaches deep inland, with the town lining its northern bank and shipyards and docks along the shore.
The mouth of the ria is guarded by two old forts facing each other across the channel, the Castle of San Felipe and the Castle of La Palma. Inside the harbour, the naval arsenal and shipyards cover a large stretch of waterfront, their basins and slipways cutting geometric shapes into the coastline.
The Magdalena district, planned in the eighteenth century, is a remarkably regular grid of parallel streets. Ferrol is also the starting point of the Camino Inglés, one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela. A Ferrol map poster brings ria, fortifications and grid together into one picture.
