Florencia, capital of the Caquetá department, sits at the base of the Eastern Cordillera, where the mountains fall away into the lowlands of the Amazon basin. The city grew along the Hacha River, which winds through it from the hills. Its streets fill the gently sloping land between the river's bends and the first steep ridges to the northwest.
Florencia was founded in 1902, when traders were moving into the region, and it is reportedly named after the Italian city of Florence. It is often described as the gateway to the Colombian Amazon. It remains the main city of Caquetá, and roads from the interior cross the mountains to reach it before continuing into the lowlands.
On a map, the city shows a clear contrast between its orderly central grid and the looser, winding streets that climb the surrounding slopes.
