Frankfort, the capital of Kentucky, is defined by the Kentucky River, which loops tightly through the city in a series of meanders. On a map, the old downtown fills one of these bends, and its small grid is almost enclosed by water. On the opposite side, the State Capitol sits in its own neighbourhood, and residential streets climb the wooded bluffs above the valley.
The city is small for a state capital, and the river valley partly explains why. Steep slopes limit where streets can go. Frankfort Cemetery, on a bluff overlooking the river, holds the grave of Daniel Boone. The surrounding area is part of Kentucky's bourbon country, and Buffalo Trace Distillery lies on the river at the city's edge.

The contrast between the flat bottomland and the winding hill roads adds depth, even in plain black and white.
