Friedrichshafen lies on the northern shore of Lake Constance, in southern Germany. On the map, the lake fills the whole southern half, giving the city a long waterfront where the promenade, harbour and old centre sit. Streets spread north from the shore through residential areas and industrial sites.
The city is closely linked with Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who built his first airships here at the start of the twentieth century. The Zeppelin Museum sits by the harbour, and the city remains a centre of aerospace and engineering. Ferries connect the port with Romanshorn on the Swiss side of the lake.
