Fyzābād, also written Faizabad, lies on the south bank of the Ghaghara River in eastern Uttar Pradesh, a stretch known locally as the Saryu. It forms a twin town with Ayodhya, a few kilometres to the east, and on the map the two built-up areas run together along the river. The district has been renamed Ayodhya, though the Faizabad name is still widely used for the town.
In the eighteenth century Faizabad was the first capital of the Nawabs of Awadh, before the court moved to Lucknow. Their legacy survives in monuments such as the Gulab Bari, the garden tomb of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, and the Bahu Begum ka Maqbara, the tomb of his wife. The town also has a cantonment established during the colonial period.
