Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, lies on the Gomti River, which winds through the city in a series of broad curves. On a map the river divides the older districts on the south bank from the newer areas to the north and east, and several bridges carry roads across it at intervals.
The historic core, shaped under the Nawabs of Awadh in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, contains the Bara Imambara and the Rumi Darwaza gateway, surrounded by tight, irregular lanes. Nearby, Hazratganj, the main shopping district, has wider and more formal streets, while the older bazaars of Aminabad and Chowk remain densely built.
East of the river, Gomti Nagar is a large planned district with a regular layout and big parks, including the Ambedkar Memorial Park.
