Gembloux lies in the province of Namur, on the open plateau of central Belgium, and the map shows a compact historic centre surrounded by wide agricultural land. The town grew around a Benedictine abbey founded in the tenth century, and the old core still has the rounded, irregular street pattern of a medieval settlement. The small Orneau valley runs nearby.
The town's belfry is part of the UNESCO-listed group of belfries of Belgium and France, and the former abbey buildings now house Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech, the agricultural sciences faculty of the University of Liège. That academic role fits the setting well, since the landscape around town is among the most farmed in Wallonia.
