Guben lies in the southeast of Brandenburg, on the western bank of the Lusatian Neisse. Since 1945 the river has been the border between Germany and Poland, and the former eastern part of the town, including much of the historic centre, became the Polish town of Gubin. On a map the two halves still read as one place split by water.
The German side is laid out around former industrial areas, including the textile and hat-making businesses that once made Guben known, with residential streets and later housing estates spreading west. Bridges cross the river to Gubin, and a small island in the Neisse, once home to the town's theatre, sits between the two.
