Hamar lies on the eastern shore of Mjøsa, Norway’s largest lake, in the farming district of Hedmarken. The centre is a tidy grid of streets running down towards the water, laid out when Hamar was refounded as a trading town in the nineteenth century. On a map the most striking element is the lake itself, a wide shape that fills much of the frame and gives the shoreline a long, gentle curve.
West of the centre, the Domkirkeodden headland holds the ruins of the medieval cathedral, protected since the late 1990s by a large glass structure. Hamar was a bishop’s seat in the Middle Ages before the old town declined. To the south the wetlands of Akersvika spread across a shallow bay, and near them stands Vikingskipet, the hall built for speed skating at the 1994 Winter Olympics.

The Olympic speed skating hall sits by the southern edge of town. Its long, hull-shaped roof is one of the most recognisable modern buildings in Norway.
Akersvika bay
A shallow bay and nature reserve cut into the shore south of Hamar, drawing soft, irregular edges of reed and water between the town and the farmland.
