Hamilton is the county town of South Lanarkshire, on the south side of the River Clyde southeast of Glasgow. On a map its geography is easy to read. The Clyde and the long, straight body of Strathclyde Loch lie to the north. The town centre climbs the slope above them, and residential districts spread south and west toward open farmland. The M74 runs past the eastern side of the town.
The town grew around the estate of the Dukes of Hamilton, whose vast Hamilton Palace was demolished in the 1920s. The Hamilton Mausoleum still stands in the low parks by the river, and it is known for one of the longest echoes of any building in the world. Chatelherault, the ducal hunting lodge, sits to the southeast above the wooded gorge of the Avon Water.

The Clyde follows the town's northern edge, and the Avon Water cuts along the east through a wooded valley. Together the two rivers frame Hamilton on two sides.
Low Parks and Mausoleum
The open ground of the Low Parks, where the Hamilton Mausoleum stands, leaves a clear gap between the town centre and the river. This reflects the former ducal estate.
