Hanyuan is the seat of Ningqiang County in the Hanzhong area of southwestern Shaanxi, near the borders with Sichuan and Gansu. The name means source of the Han. It refers to the headwaters of the Han River, a major tributary of the Yangtze, which rise in the mountains of the county.
The surrounding land is steep and forested, part of the mountain country along the Shaanxi–Sichuan border. From above, the town fills the narrow valley floor, its streets stretched along the river in a long, thin shape. Side valleys branch off the main one and carry roads and small villages into the hills.
A Hanyuan map poster shows a town defined by its setting. Roads and blocks line both sides of the water, bridges link the two banks, and the edges of town press up against slopes that leave little room to grow. The long, narrow form, with open space on either side where the hills begin, gives the print a distinctive shape.

The river runs through the middle of town, and bridges at short intervals link the two sides. They add short cross lines to the composition.
Side valleys
Smaller valleys branch off into the hills, with roads and hamlets following them upstream. They give the map a branching, tree-like outline.
