Heishui is a town in the uplands of southeast Chongqing, near where the municipality borders Hunan, Hubei and Guizhou. This is rugged karst country in the Wuling Mountains, and the map shows it immediately. Roads twist along the valleys, the town stretches out wherever there is flat land, and small villages sit on ridges and slopes.
Southeast Chongqing is home to large Tujia and Miao communities, and the region's culture, architecture and festivals differ noticeably from those of Chongqing city. Limestone shapes the landscape into steep hills, streams that can vanish underground and terraced fields cut into the slopes. All of this gives local maps an unusually intricate texture.
