Herborn is in the Lahn-Dill district of central Hesse, in a narrow part of the Dill valley between wooded hills. On the map the town follows the river: the railway and main roads run along the valley floor, and the old town climbs the slope beside them in a tight tangle of lanes.
The historic centre is known for its half-timbered houses and its market square with the old town hall. Above it stands Herborn Castle. In 1584 the Nassau counts founded the Hohe Schule here, a Protestant academy that brought scholars to the town from across Europe. Its buildings still stand on the edge of the old centre.
