Hermanus lies on the northern shore of Walker Bay, along the Western Cape coast southeast of Cape Town. The town occupies a narrow band of land between the sea and the Kleinrivier Mountains, so from above it stretches along the shoreline, with residential streets filling the gentle slopes and the rocky coast forming a clear, jagged edge.
Hermanus is widely known for whale watching. Southern right whales come into Walker Bay in the winter and spring months, often close enough to be seen from the cliffs, and the town has long had a whale crier who announces sightings. A cliff path follows much of the coastline, and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve protects fynbos on the slopes above town.

East of the centre, the lagoon of the Klein River spreads behind the beach in soft, irregular shapes, adding a calm body of water to the composition.
Fynbos slopes
Above the town, the Fernkloof Nature Reserve and the mountain slopes remain largely unbuilt, leaving a clear open band that frames the streets from the north.
