Icapuí sits at the eastern end of Ceará's coast, next to the border with Rio Grande do Norte. It is less a single town than a chain of settlements along the shore. On a map the coastline is the defining line, a long curve with small communities and beach roads running beside it.
The coast here is known for its reddish cliffs, broad sandy beaches and a strong fishing tradition, especially for lobster. Inland, the map becomes quiet and open, with dunes, scrubland and a few straight roads. Along the shore, small streets cluster where the villages sit close to the water.
