Icaria is shaped like a narrow blade laid across the eastern Aegean, running from west to east with a mountain spine down its full length. There is little flat ground. On a map the roads show it plainly, doubling back on themselves as they climb from the coast over the ridge, and the villages sit scattered across the slopes rather than gathered in one place.
The main port, Agios Kirykos, lies on the southern shore, with the thermal springs of Therma a short distance along the coast. On the north side, Evdilos and Armenistis face a rougher sea and a coastline of small coves. The island takes its name from the myth of Icarus, who is said to have fallen into the waters nearby after flying too close to the sun.
In recent decades Icaria has become known for the unusual longevity of its residents and is often cited as one of the world's Blue Zones, with slow days and hillside gardens part of the explanation usually offered. Between Evdilos and Armenistis the northern coast is cut into small bays and beaches, a more irregular edge than the steep, straight southern shore.
