Ikongo is in the Fitovinany Region of southeastern Madagascar, in the hilly country between the central highlands and the Indian Ocean coast. This is the traditional land of the Tanala, whose name is often translated as people of the forest. On a map the town is modest. A handful of streets gather at a crossroads, and the surrounding hills are cut by streams and narrow valley floors.
The drawing is mostly about scale and space. Ikongo's streets cover only a small area, and the lines leading out of town soon become tracks that follow ridges and valleys to outlying villages. Around them, much of the ground is left open, which gives the poster a sparse, airy quality. It shows a place defined far more by its landscape than by its buildings.
