Jeffreys Bay lies on the Indian Ocean coast of the Eastern Cape, west of Gqeberha. On a map it is a long, narrow town that follows the shoreline, with a few main roads parallel to the beach and many short residential streets running down toward the sea. Behind the town, coastal scrub and dunes lead up to farmland. There is no grid here, only a steady line of streets that follows the coast.
The town is known around the world for surfing. Supertubes, a long right-hand point break, is one of the most famous waves anywhere and has hosted a leg of the professional world tour for many years. The shape of the coast explains the wave: rocky points break the shoreline into a series of shallow curves, and swell wraps around each point in long, even lines.
Jeffreys Bay is also known for the shells that wash up on its beaches, and for the holiday homes that fill the streets closest to the water.
