Jūnāgadh means old fort, and the city is still organised around one. Uparkot, an ancient citadel on raised ground on the eastern side of the old town, is a clear walled outline on the map. Below it, the old city is a tight tangle of lanes, markets and small squares. Newer, straighter roads then spread west and south across the Saurashtra plain.
East of the city, the ground rises towards Girnar, the group of volcanic peaks sacred to Jains and Hindus. A long stairway of stone steps climbs through temples to the summits. On a Jūnāgadh map poster the contrast is strong: busy streets on one side, and on the other a pilgrim path winding up through largely unbuilt forest.
The city has many layers of history. A rock bearing edicts of the emperor Ashoka stands on the road to Girnar. The nawabs of Junagadh built ornate tombs such as the Mahabat Maqbara. The state's disputed accession to India in 1947–48 remains a notable chapter, and the Gir forest, the last home of the Asiatic lion, lies a short distance south.

Volcanic peaks rise to the east, reached by a long pilgrim stairway. The slopes stay largely unbuilt, so they frame the city with open, quiet space.

Below the fort, narrow winding streets pack into a dense core. They are quite different from the broader, straighter roads of the newer western districts.
