Porbandar lies on the coast of Saurashtra in Gujarat, facing the Arabian Sea. The town occupies a low stretch of land between the open shoreline and a creek that winds inland, so on the map it appears almost enclosed by water. The old town forms a compact core of close-set lanes, with newer districts, the port and the beachfront spreading around it.
Porbandar is best known as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born here in 1869. The house where he was born is now part of the Kirti Mandir memorial. In tradition the town is also linked with Sudama, the childhood friend of Krishna, and it has long been a port for fishing and for trade across the Arabian Sea.

A tidal creek winds along the inland side of the town, with marshy ground around it, and a wetland within the town is protected as a bird sanctuary.

The port with its breakwaters sits on the coast, while the seafront promenade traces a long, clean curve along the edge of the map.
