Kampong Thom is the capital of the Cambodian province of the same name. It sits on the Stung Sen river, roughly halfway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. On a map, the town is compact and orderly. A grid of streets lies near the river, and National Road 6 passes through it. Flat rice fields and scattered villages stretch in every direction.
The province is home to Sambor Prei Kuk, a pre-Angkorian temple site north of the town. It was the centre of the Chenla-era capital Ishanapura and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Many travellers stop in Kampong Thom on their way to the temples.
