Kenora sits at the northern tip of Lake of the Woods in north-western Ontario, where the lake drains into the Winnipeg River. From above it is as much water as land. Bays cut deep into the shoreline, islands scatter across the frame, and streets squeeze onto the rocky peninsulas between them.
The town's name comes from an amalgamation in the early twentieth century of Keewatin, Norman and Rat Portage, the older name of the settlement. Kenora has long been a gateway for cottagers, anglers and boaters heading into the lake's many channels, and the Trans-Canada Highway passes through on its way between Winnipeg and the rest of Ontario.
