Open-pit mines
Large chromite pits lie close to the town. Their terraced edges and curving haul roads create broad, concentric shapes that stand out clearly on the map.

El mapa
Khromtau Map Poster & Print
Khromtau lies in the Aktobe Region of western Kazakhstan, on open steppe with long horizons in every direction. The town grew around the mining of chromite, the ore from which chromium is made, and its name reflects that. On a map, it has two distinct parts: a residential town of regular blocks and the large industrial landscape of mines and processing sites nearby.
The residential streets follow a planned layout typical of Soviet-era industrial towns, with straight roads, apartment blocks and open courtyards. Beyond them, the mining area is shaped very differently, with the stepped rims of open pits, spoil heaps and haul roads drawing wide curves across the ground. Few towns show their purpose so plainly from above.
A Khromtau map poster puts both halves on one sheet. The orderly town grid on one side and the large, contoured shapes of the mines on the other make an unusual and strong composition, particularly in black and white. For people connected with the town and its industry, it is a recognisable portrait of where they live and work.

Planned residential grid
The town's streets follow a regular, planned pattern of straight roads and apartment blocks, built to house the workers of the mining industry.
Open steppe
Around Khromtau the steppe stretches flat and mostly empty, so the town and its industrial landscape appear as a compact island of detail on the map.
