Kirkland stretches along the eastern shore of Lake Washington, across the water from Seattle. The map is dominated by that shoreline, a long edge of parks, marinas and small bays, with the downtown clustered around the waterfront. Behind it, neighbourhoods climb gentle hills in a mix of grid streets and winding residential roads, while Interstate 405 runs north to south through the eastern part of the city.
Juanita Bay forms a quieter inlet to the north, with wetlands and boardwalks, and the Cross Kirkland Corridor, a former rail line turned trail, cuts a long path through the city. Kirkland is also known for lending its name to Costco's Kirkland Signature brand, since the company was based here in its early years.
