Kırklareli lies in East Thrace, the European part of Turkey, a short distance south of the border with Bulgaria. On the map the town forms a compact, roughly rounded shape in open agricultural country, with main roads radiating out toward Edirne, Lüleburgaz and the border villages. North-east of the town, the land climbs into the wooded Istranca, or Strandzha, mountains.
The name means roughly the land of the forty, and in Ottoman times the town was known as Kırk Kilise, forty churches, a reminder of its once mixed Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish population. The Hızırbey Mosque, with its adjoining bath and bazaar from the late fourteenth century, still stands at the centre of the old town, around which the modern streets were laid.

Straight regional roads leave town in several directions, toward Edirne, Lüleburgaz and the border, cutting through fields that stay almost empty on the printed map.
